Discover White Horse Tavern

The moment you step into White Horse Tavern, located at 26 Marlborough St, Newport, RI 02840, United States, you immediately sense a blend of history and warmth that’s hard to find elsewhere. Having visited several historic eateries along the East Coast, this tavern stands out not just for its age-it dates back to 1673-but for the way it seamlessly combines colonial charm with modern dining comforts. The wooden beams, soft lighting, and rustic décor instantly make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook, yet the atmosphere remains relaxed and approachable.

From personal experience, the menu at White Horse Tavern is a delightful mix of classic New England fare and inventive dishes. On my last visit, I opted for the clam chowder followed by their slow-roasted prime rib. Both dishes were perfectly executed-the chowder was rich and creamy, packed with tender clams, while the prime rib was juicy with a flavorful herb crust. Pairing the meal with one of their carefully curated local wines elevated the experience even further. The kitchen follows a meticulous process, sourcing fresh, local ingredients to maintain authenticity and flavor, which makes every bite memorable.

Many reviews highlight the impeccable service here, and that matches my experience. The staff is knowledgeable, not just about the menu, but also the tavern’s history. It’s fascinating to learn that White Horse Tavern is recognized as one of the oldest operating taverns in the United States. According to historical records from the Newport Historical Society, the building has hosted generations of diners, from colonial merchants to contemporary travelers, making every visit feel like part of a living tradition.

The ambiance is ideal for both casual dinners and special occasions. During a recent weekend visit, the tavern had a small live acoustic performance, which added to the cozy yet lively environment. It’s clear that the management takes care to balance historical preservation with guest enjoyment. If you’re curious about the tavern’s legacy, walking through the rooms and examining the period furnishings gives a tangible connection to the past while you enjoy modern comforts like Wi-Fi and contemporary table service.

In terms of accessibility, the location at 26 Marlborough St is easy to find, with ample parking nearby. The tavern also accommodates larger groups and has a well-structured reservation system to ensure smooth dining experiences even during busy weekends. Based on multiple restaurant review platforms, diners consistently praise not only the food quality but also the overall dining experience, including attentive service, comfortable seating, and a menu that caters to diverse tastes-from seafood lovers to those seeking hearty meat dishes.

An interesting aspect often overlooked is the tavern’s dedication to sustainability. They frequently rotate seasonal ingredients, reducing waste and supporting local farmers. Research by the National Restaurant Association suggests that diners increasingly value restaurants that practice sustainability, and White Horse Tavern appears ahead of the curve by integrating these practices without compromising on quality or flavor.

Whether you’re a local or visiting Newport for the first time, the White Horse Tavern offers more than just a meal-it’s an immersive journey through history, flavor, and hospitality. Walking in, ordering a signature dish, and enjoying the carefully curated drinks menu creates an experience that lingers long after the last bite. The combination of authentic cuisine, historic charm, and thoughtful service makes it a standout destination in Rhode Island’s culinary scene.

  • We visited here from out of state with high expectations. Every single one of them was exceeded. Good wine selection and great service. Make sure you make a reservation! The dress code is clearly unenforced but perhaps it varies depending on different times of the night or who is hosting. My preference is just to commit to one of them, either drop the dress code or enforce it. Include a note with the reservation, & put up a sign outside so it is harder to claim ignorance regarding the website info. The field greens had an exquisite minty + turmeric taste with candied nuts and it was a perfect appetizer! The lobster ravioli and lobster bisque are similar so make sure you want them both if ordering both. The duck legs were crispy on the outside and they were so good! Would recommend going early so you can park in their free parking lot, I’m sure it gets full. One of the dining rooms is upstairs so be sure to request what you need in advance.

  • Full moon on a Friday and lucky me there was a table near the bar. Beef Wellington was superb, see pics and the wine was outstanding. Great hostess and bartender. Efficient, friendly and scrumptious. So glad I made the walk from my air bnb! Thank you for graciously welcoming me from Nashville!

  • Excellent restaurant which is also the oldest tavern in America. Lot of history, beautiful stories and architecture. Really nice old woody feel. Lovely service and staff who are friendly. Highly recommend you book in advance guys it gets full fast. We have been three times on three different trips. The food is nice but not overwhelmingly good. The best dishes were the Brussels sprouts aide dish- must have! Also the dessert mousse was amazing!! The duck chicken and steak were 7/10.

  • History and beautiful food. Service was great and answered all my questions about the history of the tavern, drinks were so good we had 2 each. The charcuterie was delicious, the Wellington was perfect, and my husband had the catch of the day which he said was the best fish he’s ever had and that man is not easy to please! The tavern candy bar was the best ending to a wonderful meal and experience.

  • Scotch eggs were about as flavorful and perfectly cooked as you can expect. Clam chowder was excellent. We also ordered endive salad blackened sword fish and beef Wellington. Bread pudding and candy bar rounded out the meal. Smokey Old fashioned to start. Everything was impeccably prepared. Best meal we had for this trip. Service was warm and attentive.

  • I will just say - when George Washington walked into this tavern, it was already 100 years old! If that isn’t enough to pique your curiosity and your desire to visit this iconic restaurant, then let me tempt you further. The wine selection is impressive; the food (don’t miss the Beef Wellington) is delicious; and the service is impeccable!. Still not convinced? The staff is welcoming and gracious - and the bartender pours the perfect Rusty Nail! Still need more? Our reservations kept changing (our fault - NOT theirs) - but Bill and Ryan were superb and accommodating. We were celebrating a birthday - and the owners of the Golden Steer Las Vegas were in our party (no pressure ). It could not have been a more exciting or grander memory! If you have not dined at the White Horse Tavern, then it’s high time you did. You will not be disappointed - and who knows? … you may just walk in George’s exact footsteps!

  • The food was delicious! We ordered the lobster ravioli, scallops, oysters, and lobster soup. The portions were generous and everything tasted great. The ravioli were especially amazing, served with a rich sauce that included extra lobster and shrimp. My mother-in-law loved the Nespresso martini with Baileys, which we highly recommend as well.
